and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), licence number 2015 – 009, and worth 20 ECTS points.

The first entry requirement for this course is to have English language skills of at least an MQF
level 2 or CEFR B2, because this course is taught in the English language. Students are required to
pass an English language competency test, or provide evidence of an English language MQF Level
2 or equivalent qualification before beginning study.
The second entry requirement is for those who do not have an MQF Level 4 or equivalent
qualification in the field of Human Resource Management. Any student who is over the age of 23
qualifies to study with St Thomas Institute as a mature student. A mature student can study this
course providing they have the English language skills outlined above.

This course is delivered entirely online. We use the Zoom software, however we are open to
accommodating students and teachers by using alternative software if the situation requires.
Overall Course Objectives:
a) Learners will develop a deep understanding of how to handle and analyse advanced literature
on human resource management;
b) apply analytical, logical, critical and creative thinking to develop operational skills and
capacities;
c) how to work and communicate as a team, in coordination and cooperation with others to solve
problems related to human resource management. This includes understanding and implementing
company strategies and partnerships;
d) develop good judgemental skills in dealing with issues and values related to responsibility and
ethics, such as comparing, contrasting and evaluating various practices and theories.
e) understand the importance of teamwork and collaborative learning, including the assessment
of self and others in identifying issues for further learning and development;
f) develop a culture of being independent and autonomous when the need arises, by adhering to
agreements in general and especially in maintaining timeframes.
Learning Outcomes for Knowledge:
a) Understand and assimilate knowledge related to human resource management legislation,
practices, policies and procedures;
b) understand how to critically analyse, respond creatively, logically and with a sense of strategy
that meets human resource management obligations;
c) critique existing human resource management concepts and tools and assess their relevance
and benefit in the workplace, in line with company strategy and limitations.
d) Understand key operational tools, techniques and practices used in human resource
management. Learners will also demonstrate how these tools, techniques and practices may impact
on the employer and the employee in positive and negative manners;
e) make ethical judgements and final decisions on disciplinary matters;
f) understand specific laws, practices, theories and concepts related to human resource
management and understand how to apply these in the workplace to avoid negative scenarios such
as low staff morale, productivity or high staff turnover.
Learning Outcomes for Skills:
a) Develop research skills to identify and apply relevant data to support designing and
implementing human resource policies and practices;
b) apply natural intuition, logical analysis, creative and other analytic abilities in problem solving
and transfer of knowledge to different human resources management situations;
c) identify and apply the most appropriate communication style depending on the scenario and
parties involved;
d) train yourself and develop skills in the formulation of answers and responses to different
concrete and abstract human resources management scenarios and develop related abilities ot enable
them to be creative in their response to different scenarios;
e) evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and identify needs for further learning to develop your
skill set. Learners will also be able to develop training needs analysis for others within the
organisation and learn how to apply these as part of employee performance management.
This course is aimed at students aiming at specialised fields in human resource management, or

We use what is known as Synchronous Online Delivery. This means that students and teachers are
in an online video or audio call with each other. This takes the form of a lecture in which the
students and teachers can interact. Lectures will typically feature live presentations by the tutor
explaining the topic up for discussion. These online lectures will also feature organized role-play
sessions prepared in advance by both the tutor and the students. Students will be presented with a
variety of tasks to enhance their conversational skills. Students will be provided with pre-recorded
audio and video material which can be reutilized for revision purposes both before and after the
final assessment is carried out.
The assessment for this course will include a case study to be examined in class and for self-study.
Essay writing, of at least 600 words long, as well as a multiple-choice assignment will also be
given. This shall be considered as part of an ongoing assessment, which carries 40% of the final
mark. A formal exam of a 2-hour written paper, with 6 questions, covering all areas of the module
will be given after each module. Students are required to answer three questions. The required
amount of attendance for passing this course is 75% of the tuition time.
The total learning hours for this course is 500. This is broken down into: 100 hours of direct contact
with the teachers, 392 estimated hours of self-study and 8 hours of formal assessment.
The MQF Level 5 Award in Human Resource Management takes 25 weeks of study and consists of four smaller awards. These four awards are awarded and certificated separately with a final overall certificate upon completion of all four awards.
There will be 50 online sessions of two hours per session, with two sessions per week. The award ‘Legal aspects related to Human Resources’ is worth 4 ECTS and takes five weeks. The award 'Human Resource Strategy' is worth 4 ECTS and takes 5 weeks. The award 'Human Resource Operations' is worth 6 ECTS and takes seven and a half weeks. The award 'Human Resource Management Staffing' is worth 6 ECTS and takes seven and a half weeks. There is a separate examination for each of these awards.

A+: 100% - 90%
A: 89% - 80%
B+: 79% - 75%
B: 74% - 70%
C+: 69% - 60%
C: 59% - 55%
D+: 54% - 50%
D: 49% - 45%
F: 44% - 0%
A pass mark is considered to be 45%, which must be attained in each module.
